There are a lot of myths about orthodontics and the below mentioned facts will help you understand this discipline of dentistry better.

How Orthodontic Treatment Works
Clear Aligner is the clear way to straighten teeth without braces, using aligners. Aligners are removable and virtually invisible, which means you can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing; and you can still eat and drink what you want. Also, you can brush and floss normally to maintain healthy gums and teeth; and there are no wires, metal or brackets to cause mouth abrasions.
Many of our patients had never considered traditional braces but are now happily and comfortably improving their smiles with aligner.
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The purpose of Orthodontics is to treat any type of "Bad bites" or malocclusion that harms the form, function and appearance of teeth and jaws.
Crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain. This contributes tooth decay, gum disease and tooth loss. Straight teeth contribute to healthy teeth and gums resulting in an effective bite and beautiful smile.
A bad bite also causes abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, difficulty in chewing and/or speaking, excessive stress on supporting bone and gum tissues and potential joint problems. Many problems if left untreated worsen with time and may require extensive dental care later.
Children and adults whose malocclusions are left untreated may go through life with reduced self esteem and lack of confidence, affecting their performance in all spheres of life.
Braces are special dental treatment. The specialist giving braces is called an orthodontist- who has done a master's program- M.D.S. A qualified orthodontist is a dental specialist who can diagnose, prevent and treat facial and dental irregularities. All orthodontists are dentists but only a very small percentage of dentists are orthodontists. Every dental specialist with an M.D.S degree is not an orthodontist as dentistry has many branches of specialization. Here, you will be in the office of a qualified orthodontist who has the vision, foresight and the skills to proficiently place orthodontic appliances and achieve corrections for your teeth, jaws and face that will last a life time.
It is recommended to get the first orthodontic check up done at the age of 7years. Most treatments usually begin between the ages of 10 and 14, certain problems with jaw growth and alignment/space for erupting teeth can be detected by an orthodontist early and are easier to treat. However orthodontic treatment today is possible at any age. Adults with healthy gums and bone support to the teeth can undergo orthodontic treatment at any age.
Braces vary in appearance. Some braces are clear, nearly invisible (ceramic) while others are made of stainless steel and may or may not have colored elastics around them. For adult patients, "INVISIBLE BRACES" are available which are attached to the teeth from inside and hence are not visible outside. These are also called as lingual braces. Dr. Nillachandra Kshetrimayum has undergone special training in Lingual Orthodontics.
Treatment duration varies according to the complexity of the problem and age of the patient. Usually the treatment lasts from 18 to 24 months.
